Winches and windlasses for general purposes

Operator and Maintainer of Hoists and WinchesOur training for operators of hoists and winches is based on the regulation issued on July 18, 2001, by the Minister of Economy regarding the supervision of qualifications required for the operation and maintenance of technical equipment, along with the law on technical supervision issued on December 21, 2000.

What Are Hoists and Winches?

Hoists and winches are lifting devices primarily used for moving loads using a load-bearing cable (rope or chain) terminated with a gripping device (usually a hook). In addition to vertical movement (up and down), both hoists and winches can be structurally adapted for horizontal movement along a stationary track. These devices also exist in a stationary version, allowing operation only in one place (vertical lifting without the ability to travel).

What's the Difference Between a Hoist and a Winch?

The main difference between a hoist and a winch is related to the load-bearing structure. In the case of a hoist, the housing of the lifting mechanism establishes its load-bearing structure, and any damage to it poses a safety risk to the operator. Winch mechanisms, on the other hand, are placed on a separate load-bearing structure, usually established by a frame (movable, stationary, or sliding), so the housing is not a load-bearing component.

Qualifications for UDT Equipment Operation

Hoists and winches are subject to technical supervision by institutions such as the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT), Military Technical Inspection, or Transport Technical Inspection. These devices may fall under one of three forms of technical supervision, depending on the specific type of hoist or winch:

We distinguish the following forms of technical supervision:

  • Simplified supervision - for equipment operation that does not require qualifications, no technical examinations are conducted, and the device is not registered. However, maintenance by a qualified person and maintenance inspections are required. This form of supervision applies to hoists and winches that:
    • Have a load capacity below 250 kg (if not used for lifting people).
    • Are used in the category of general-purpose devices with manual drive and a maximum load capacity of 2000 kg for all mechanisms.
    • Are equipped with a single-phase electric drive with a load capacity of up to 1000 kg.
  • Limited supervision - which requires suitable qualifications for both operation and maintenance of the equipment, and the device must be registered. In this case, regular maintenance inspections and technical examinations are required. This form of supervision covers hoists and winches with manual drive for all mechanisms with a load capacity above 2000 kg and winches with mechanical drive.
  • Full supervision - which requires suitable qualifications for both operation and maintenance of the equipment, and the buyer's entire range of devices must be registered with the UDT office. In this case, regular maintenance inspections and technical examinations are conducted. This supervision applies to special-purpose hoists and winches.

How to Obtain Qualifications for Hoists and Winches? Our company specializes in training individuals to acquire UDT qualifications for operating and maintaining hoists and winches. However, qualifications are only granted after passing the UDT examination. Therefore, after completing the training, we submit an application to the Office of Technical Inspection on behalf of the participants to schedule the examination. Upon obtaining a positive result in the competence test, future operators and maintainers of machines receive a UDT certificate that authorizes them to operate the specific equipment.

Examination

The examination organized by the Office of Technical Inspection consists of a written part, conducted in the form of a professional test. For all candidates who successfully pass the written part, a practical part of the examination is also conducted. It involves tasks related to the operation of the equipment. The document confirming the obtained qualifications is the authorization issued by the Office of Technical Inspection.

Qualifications

The training is completed with an examination before the commission of the Office of Technical Inspection. Certificates issued after completing our training and passing the UDT examination authorize individuals to operate general-purpose hoists and winches. The document confirming the obtained qualifications is issued for a specific term. Validity of UDT qualifications for hoists and winches:
  • For general-purpose equipment, the validity period is up to 10 years from the examination date.
  • For general-purpose and special-purpose equipment, the validity period is up to 5 years from the examination date.

Training Topics

The training organized by our company has gained nationwide recognition, stemming from the comprehensive preparation of participants for their professional duties and high pass rates in UDT examinations. Our course on hoist and winch operation begins with an explanation of procedural issues based on regulations and laws. Legal frameworks are crucial as they ensure the proper level of safety and guide participants in their further actions. To obtain qualifications for hoists and winches, the local Office of Technical Inspection requires all candidates to have full knowledge of occupational health and safety rules because they are essential for preventing dangerous situations during work. Theoretical considerations of potential hazards that may arise when working with UDT equipment should also be complemented by personalized practical guidance tailored to the specific job position. The use of various safety devices, presented by us as an integral part of the training, becomes crucial. Another essential element of our courses is a module describing the operation and construction principles of individual equipment components. This knowledge is mandatory in this profession, as it is impossible to carry out supervisory and repair tasks without fundamental information about the functioning of hoists and winches. Our course, developed by our company, concludes with practical classes, translating theoretical knowledge into correct habits on the actual job site.

Basic Course Information

Our training for general-purpose hoists and winches is aimed at individuals who want to acquire the required qualifications and, consequently, start working as operators or maintainers of these machines. The course prepares participants for both the theoretical and practical parts of the UDT examination, so after completing it, they will be able to pass the qualification check with ease.

Training Objective

Training on the operation of general-purpose hoists and winches, as well as their maintenance, provides participants with the necessary knowledge for the UDT examination. The course is designed to obtain a qualification certificate suitable for the chosen job position, either as an operator or maintainer. Our experienced trainers and extensive experience in the market distinguish us, resulting in an above-average pass rate in UDT examinations.

Requirements for Participants

To participate in the training, individuals must meet the following criteria:
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have completed primary school.
  • Provide a statement of good health and no contraindications for working as an operator or maintainer of hoists and winches.

Training Cost

The training cost is determined individually and depends primarily on the number of participants and the training format (internal or external). The cost of the course includes:
  • Practical sessions (working with hoists and winches).
  • Theoretical classes (lectures on the subject matter).
  • Training materials.

The fundamental difference between a hoist and a winch lies mainly in the load-bearing structure. In the case of a hoist, the housing of the lifting mechanism establishes its load-bearing structure, and any damage to it poses a safety risk to the operator.
